Toolara Forest
The Park is situated beside the beautiful Toolara Forest which is a great place for either a brisk or a leisurely walk where you will see plenty of wildlife and interesting plant life. A family of kangaroos frequently graze of the lush green lawns quite close to the camp kitchen along with the 40 plus variety of birds which visit Standown throughout the year. |
Silkyoak Tea Gardens
In the next road on the right toward Gympie are the Silkyoak Tea Gardens which are open most days and nights for smokos and great meals as well as your alcohol supplies. Further along the road we are fortunate to have the farmer’s fresh fruit and vege stall where the vegetables are all reasonably priced. Venturing a little further on the gravel road you can complete your supplies with a visit to the crayfish farm or further still to the Winery. |
Tin Can Bay
Tin Can Bay is just 24kms down the road where the water is calm, an ideal spot for the tinny, fishing and picnicking. The dolphins come into the boat ramp where you can feed them from 8am most mornings. Tin Can Bay is a great source of fresh sea food and has a golf course, Country Club, bowls club and yacht club. It has all the essential services while still retaining the quiet village image.
On your way to Rainbow Beach you can travel through the reasonably new estate of Cooloola Cove where a new shopping centre has recently opened. This saves a few kilometres and it is an interesting drive. |

Rainbow Beach & Fraser Island
Rainbow Beach is the gateway to Fraser Island and a place which in the past couple of years has really increased its pace and facilities. The beach is patrolled by life guards and the coloured sands are spectacular. There are numerous restaurants, some with spectacular views overlooking the ocean. The town itself has a luxurious new hotel and speciality shops recently completed on the site where the old Rainbow Beach Hotel was, but the free BBQs across the road are still a great place for a BBQ overlooking the ocean. |

Gympie
To the west of Standown Park 24kms, is the historic gold mining town of Gympie. A visit to the Gold Mine Museum gives you the whole story and you can arrange to pan for your own gold and go on an underground tour. The Woodworks Museum is something different and very interesting to go through.
Gympie is well known for the Country Music Festival held on the last weekend in August and the Gold Rush Festival in mid October. The wonderful Mary Valley Rattler showcases the south side of Gympie as the steam train winds its way through the valley every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. |
Sunshine Coast Hinterland
Standown Park is a good base for day trips to the above places and Maryborough or Hervey Bay for whale watching, Maleny and Montville for the many arts and crafts or Noosa or maybe the famous Eumundi Markets. All of these places are within an hour or so away and Brisbane is only two hours south. |
